This application allows you to browse near-surface (8m) smoke data from the NOAA High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) weather model.

How to Use

• The Current tab loads the actual model surface smoke for the last 17 hours and displays model projections for the next 16 hours.
• Drag the timeline or press the play button to see a loop of the smoke movement.
• Click LATEST to update to the most recent data.
• In the Past toggle, select a date from the past to see a 24-hour run (local browser time) of the smoke conditions that day.

About the Data

The HRRR is 3km-spatial-resolution, hourly updated atmospheric model operated by NOAA.

There is a 1-2 hour lag between when the model run begins to when the data are available in cloud storage, so the latest available image (and projections) may be a few hours old.

Smoke mass density values are shown with values ranging from light blue (low smoke concentration) to purple (extreme smoke concentration).

Data is sourced from NOAA's public S3 bucket and rendered using TiTiler.

This application is adapted from the great work of Henry Rodman and Loïc Houpert at Development Seed. It has been updated by Dara Seidl of Globechalk Geographics, LLC to incorporate smoke forecast projections, playback and looping functionality, location search, and to work well on mobile.
