This time seeking flowers! K and I returned to Carrizo Plain in late March 2016, after hearing that the blooms were in session. We got to explore more spots around the plain, including the bed of Soda Lake:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-957\" src=\"http:\/\/www.migration.globechalk.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_141508.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_141508.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_141508-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_141508-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>It was so squishy and fun to walk around. Like memory foam!<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia calls Soda Lake a &#8220;shallow, ephemeral, alkali endorheic lake.&#8221; Endorheic means that it does not drain into any other bodies of water. When there is water (if there is water), it only evaporates or seeps into the ground.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-958\" src=\"http:\/\/www.migration.globechalk.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_152106.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_152106.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_152106-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_152106-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>After that, we did some hardcore chilling by this field of yellows. The yellows were overwhelming, and this photo does not do them justice.<\/p>\n<p>Next up was climbing the western hills to look out over the plain:<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-959\" src=\"http:\/\/www.migration.globechalk.com\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_155026.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_155026.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_155026-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/GLOBECHALK.COM\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/20160326_155026-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>We were not done with our search for wildflowers, so we took a side trip to Shell Creek Road in Santa Margarita, where there was rumored to be prime viewing.
